Shelley B. Clarke To Retire With 37 Years of Service

OGDEN, UT: October 19, 2011 - Goldenwest Credit Union's Chairman of the Board, Bill Hart, has announced Shelley Clarke will retire as President/CEO on December 31, 2011.

"We are most grateful to Shelley for her professional and personal dedication to Goldenwest," said Hart. "All those who associate with Shelley know this credit union is her passion. We will miss working with her, and wish Shelley and her husband John the very best for many years to come."

Shelley B. Clarke started her Goldenwest career serving members behind the teller line in 1974. She whole-heartedly embraced the credit union philosophy as she quickly moved into new accounts and loans. During her 37 years at Goldenwest, Shelley held or managed almost every position in the credit union. The knowledge gained from her experience greatly assisted Goldenwest in establishing best practices for operations, systems, marketing, and management. Shelley's strong work ethic and can-do attitude, combined with her Weber State and CUNA Management School education, helped pave a successful career path at the credit union. Shelley was named Vice President in 1983, Executive Vice President in 1990, and President/CEO in 2001.

During her tenure as President/CEO, Shelley navigated Goldenwest into a new era of strength and growth:

  • Assets grew from $190 million to $775 million
  • Membership more than doubled from 41,000 to 83,000 members
  • Branches expanded from nine offices in Weber and Davis counties into Morgan, Salt Lake, Utah and Washington counties for a total of 18 locations
  • State charter converted to a federal charter in 2003
  • Field of membership converted from community-based to a multi-common bond in 2004
  • Member share bonus dividends were declared by Board of Directors for seven consecutive years

Shelley has been a dedicated advocate for the credit union industry on both state and national levels. She has served on many advisory boards and councils, including:

  • National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) Board of Directors
  • NAFCU Region V Advisory Board
  • NAFCU Political Action Committee
  • NAFCU Regulatory Committee
  • Credit Union Executive Society (CUES) Board of Directors
  • Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Subcommittee
  • Association of Union Pacific Credit Unions President
  • Filene Research Council Advisor
  • Utah League of Credit Unions Chairperson
  • Utah Governor's Credit Union Advisory Board

A lifelong resident of Weber County, Shelley has shared her talents and skills with many organizations in the community, serving in capacities such as:

  • Weber/Ogden Chamber of Commerce Chairperson & Executive Committee
  • Weber Schools Foundation Board Member
  • Ogden Rotary Member
  • Downtown Ogden Association Member
  • Enable Industries Board Member

While Shelley has served as President/CEO, Goldenwest has been recognized and honored on national, state and local levels, including:

  • NAFCU "Credit Union of the Year"
  • CUES "Innovation" Award
  • Utah's "Best of State" (four consecutive years)
  • Utah's "Best Companies To Work For" by the Department of Workforce Services (two consecutive years)
  • Weber Human Services "Community Service" Award
  • Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce "All Star" Partner in Education Award.

Shelley has also received several individual awards in her career, including:

  • Utah's Credit Union Advocate of the Year
  • Utah's Top 25 Business Women
  • Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce Businesswoman of the Year

Kerry H. Wahlen

On January 1, 2012, Kerry H. Wahlen will step into the President/CEO role of Goldenwest Credit Union, the third largest credit union in Utah. Wahlen is well prepared for his new assignment with more than 33 years of financial industry experience. His Goldenwest career began in 1986, serving first as credit manager before transitioning to senior management and then executive vice president. He holds a degree in Business Administration from Weber State University, and an MBA from Utah State University. He is a graduate of Credit Union National Association Management School. Wahlen volunteers as a board member of the Weber School Foundation and on the Board of Trustees for the Utah Certified Development Corporation.
