What Is A Credit Union?

April 27, 2015

Goldenwest Credit Union is a not-for profit, financial cooperative that is owned, governed and operated by our members. We exist to provide financial products and services that our members require to succeed. Goldenwest does not pay dividends to outside stockholders. Each member has equal voting rights in selecting the Goldenwest Board of Directors, who provide oversight and strategic direction for the credit union. Funds on deposit at Goldenwest are insured by the NCUA.

One of the most important functions of the Board of Directors is selecting the President/CEO for the credit union. As the individual currently holding that position, I report directly to our eight Board members on credit union affairs. The men and women who serve as Directors do so without pay or compensation from the credit union. They are dedicated volunteers who put into practice the credit union philosophy of “people helping people”.

I extend my congratulations to Chairman Bill Hart and Director Jeanette Smyth who were recently re-elected to serve three year terms on the Board. I look forward to continuing our working relationship as we advance the causes of the credit union that are most important to our members. I am appreciative to Jess Hunsaker, who retired from the Board of Directors earlier this month, for 25 years of volunteer service to the credit union.

The Board of Directors elects their Officers on an annual basis each year following the Annual Business Meeting with our members. I’m pleased to report Bill Hart was re-elected as Chair, Steve Carroll was re-elected as Vice-Chair, and Stoney Wayment was elected as Secretary. I appreciate their willingness to serve our members in this important capacity.

In addition to our Board of Directors, the credit union has volunteers who serve on our Supervisory Committee. These men and women meet each month to review the safety and security of the credit union. Thanks to Chairman Ron Gebhardt, and the members of this committee, for the essential oversight they provide the credit union.

Goldenwest has been named the 2015 Utah “Best of State” winner in the credit union category. This is the seventh year in the most recent eight years that Goldenwest has received the medal. The credit union industry in Utah is among the strongest in the nation, and Goldenwest is honored to be recognized as “Best of State” in a field of so many worthy contenders.

Congratulations to our employee of the month, Andrew Nilson. Andrew works in our Payment Services Department, and has saved the credit union thousands of dollars in fraud prevention. We appreciate his efforts in protecting our members and the credit union.

As always, thanks to our members for your confidence, loyalty and support. It’s a privilege to serve you.
